Answer

Why ChatGPT does not recommend my business

Short answer

ChatGPT does not recommend a business when the pages it finds for the buyer's question do not mention that business, or when it cannot reach or understand the business's own site. When ChatGPT searches the web before it answers, it builds its recommendations from the pages it reads. If your name is not on those pages, it has little to recommend you from.

It is common. In Kin-etiq.ai's research, 198 of 305 businesses (64.9%) were not named in a single AI answer about their own category. These are businesses Kin-etiq.ai chose to approach as sales prospects or assessed for a partner, not a random sample. The AI visibility research explains who was in that group.

Kin-etiq.ai checks for five causes. Each one below says how to check it yourself.

1. ChatGPT's search cannot reach your site

OpenAI's search crawler, the program that reads websites for ChatGPT's search, is called OAI-SearchBot. If your robots.txt (a file on your site that tells these programs what they may read), your firewall or your hosting blocks it, your pages cannot appear in ChatGPT's search results. Check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot. On Cloudflare, check the bot settings in the dashboard as well, because they can add rules that are not in your own copy of the file.

2. No page on your site answers the buyer's question

ChatGPT quotes pages that answer the exact question it searched for. A home page that says "we serve everyone" gives ChatGPT little to match. A page titled with the buyer's question, which answers it in the first paragraph, gives it something to quote. Kin-etiq.ai measured its own site before the rebuild; the baseline case study has the result and the re-test date.

3. The pages ChatGPT trusts do not list you

For "who should I hire" questions, ChatGPT often builds its answer from directories and ranking lists. Asked "Best AI agency Toronto?" in our test, both ChatGPT and Claude built their answers from Clutch's Toronto rankings. If you are not on the pages it cites, you are unlikely to be in the answer, however good your own site is.

4. ChatGPT is not sure which business you are

If your name is shared with other brands, the engine may describe someone else. The fix is one consistent description of the business on your site, your profiles and the directories you are listed in.

5. Your facts are missing or inconsistent

If your site does not say plainly what you sell, where and at what price, ChatGPT has to guess or skip you. If your site, your Google Business Profile and your directory listings disagree, it has less reason to trust any of them.

How do you find your real cause?

Run your buyers' questions through ChatGPT, write down every page it cites, and open each one. Look for your name. The pages that name your competitors and not you are the shortest route into the answer.

Common questions

Does ChatGPT recommend businesses at random?

No, but its answers do change between runs. When ChatGPT searches the web, it reads a set of pages and names the businesses those pages support. A different search on a different day can return different pages, so measure across several runs.

My website is good. Why am I still not named?

A good website and being named are two separate things. In one of our assessments, a sales coaching firm's own site scored reasonably well, yet none of 20 buyer-style AI searches named it. A good site is one input; being named also depends on the other pages the engines read.

Will structured data or an llms.txt file fix it?

On their own, they are unlikely to fix it. Google says its search does not use llms.txt files for its AI features. Structured data (labels in your page code that state facts such as your name and address) helps search engines read facts, but it does not make an engine pick you. The usual cause is what the pages the engines read say, or do not say, about you.
