In Kin-etiq.ai's research, 165 of 266 businesses (62.0%) whose homepage was readable and open to the crawlers AI assistants use to answer were named in no answers. These are businesses Kin-etiq.ai chose to approach as sales prospects or assessed for a partner, not a random sample. The AI visibility research has the details.
1. Find out what ChatGPT says today
Ask ChatGPT the questions your buyers would ask, such as "best [your service] in [your city]", without your company name. A name search only tests whether ChatGPT knows you. A buyer's question tests whether it picks you. Write down who it names and which pages it cites. Run the same questions again on another day, because the answers change from run to run.
2. Let ChatGPT's search reach your site
OpenAI uses a crawler (a program that reads websites for a search engine) called OAI-SearchBot to find websites for ChatGPT's search results. It uses a separate one, GPTBot, to collect material for training its models. OpenAI's crawler page says you can allow OAI-SearchBot while blocking GPTBot. Check that your robots.txt (a file on your site that tells these programs what they may read), your firewall (the security filter in front of your site) and your hosting do not block OAI-SearchBot. On Cloudflare, check Cloudflare's bot settings too, because Cloudflare can write its own rules into robots.txt.
3. Publish a page that answers the buyer's exact question
ChatGPT quotes pages that answer the question it searched for.
Give each buyer question its own page. Put the question in the title and the heading, answer it in the first paragraph, then give the facts behind the answer. Kin-etiq.ai measured its own site before the rebuild; the baseline case study has the result and the re-test date.
4. Say what you sell, where, and for whom
State your services, your service area, your prices or price range, and how to reach you, in plain words on your own site. Keep the same facts on your Google Business Profile, your LinkedIn page and the directories in your field. When the facts disagree, an engine has less reason to trust any of them.
5. Get onto the pages ChatGPT reads
For list questions, ChatGPT builds its answer from other people's pages. Asked "Best AI agency Toronto?", ChatGPT built its answer from Clutch's Toronto rankings in our test. Look at the pages ChatGPT cites for your buyers' questions. If they are a directory, a ranking list or an association page, a fair listing there can be worth more than another page on your own site.
6. Measure your share of answers each month
One answer on one day proves little. Run the same set of questions every month on ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and track how many answers name you against the firms named instead.
Want this done for your business?
Kin-etiq.ai's AI visibility audit runs your buyers' questions on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google. It shows who is named instead of you and which pages the engines read, and sets out what to fix first. The free assessment is a Level 1 check of your website.
