Answer

How to show up in Google AI Overviews

Short answer

AI Overviews are the AI summaries at the top of some Google results. To show up in them, a page must be indexed by Google (stored so it can show in results) and allowed to show a snippet (the short text under a result) in normal search. Google says there are no additional technical requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode, its chat-style search. After that, the page has to be one Google would rank for the question, and it has to answer the question plainly enough to be lifted out.

Step 1: check the page is eligible

Eligibility is a yes-or-no test, so check it first.

  • The page is indexed. Check it with the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console.
  • The page can show a snippet. A noindex, nosnippet or max-snippet:0 instruction removes it from AI Overviews and AI Mode. These are hidden instructions in your page code or server settings that tell Google not to show the page or its text. They can also arrive in an X-Robots-Tag header that you will not see in the page itself, so check the server's response too.
  • The site is included in Search Console's Search generative AI setting. Including the site is the default; check that nobody changed it.

Step 2: rank for the question

AI Overviews are part of Google Search, so they draw on pages Google can rank. A page that does not appear anywhere for the question is unlikely to be used. Treat ordinary search work as the base: a clear title, a heading that matches the question, and links from other pages on your site.

Step 3: answer the question in the first paragraph

Put the question in the title and the main heading. Answer it directly in the first sentence or two. Then give the facts: numbers, steps, a table. This is the shape an engine can quote without rewriting your page.

Step 4: say something no other page says

Google's own guidance asks for original pages written for people. A page that repeats what a hundred others say gives Google no reason to pick it. Your own prices, your own measurements and your own cases are the parts no competitor can copy. Our baseline case study is an example: numbers only Kin-etiq.ai could publish.

What did the engines say when we asked this question?

We put "how to show up in Google AI Overviews" to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini on 20 October 2026. Only ChatGPT went to Google's documentation. Claude quoted Google's requirements but cited third-party guides, and Gemini answered without running a search at all. This page quotes Google directly instead of guessing.

How do you check your own pages?

Kin-etiq.ai's AI visibility audit checks whether each of your pages can appear in an AI Overview. It also shows which buyer questions get an AI answer that leaves you out. The free assessment is a Level 1 check of your website, and the Monitor plan adds your buyers' questions on ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.

Common questions

Why am I not getting an AI Overview for my page?

First check eligibility. The page must be in Google's index and allowed to show a snippet, and the site must not be excluded in Search Console's Search generative AI setting. If those are fine, the page is eligible but not chosen, which comes down to ranking and to how directly the page answers the question.

Do I need special code or an llms.txt file for AI Overviews?

No. Google says there are no additional technical requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that Google Search does not use llms.txt files.

Can I keep my site out of AI Overviews?

Yes. Search Console has a setting under Settings called Search generative AI. Excluding the site removes it from AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says the setting is not used for ranking in the rest of Search.
